AskMen Selects: Barrets Buys for June 2019
Style and grooming are a big deal for us here at AskMen. You might come for the awesome sex and dating content we offer, but chances are, the more you look good, the more you feel good, and when you’re feeling good, you’re going to be putting a lot more of that sex and dating advice to good use — right?
As AskMen’s style and grooming editor, I work hard everyday to find the best brands and products that will make your life look and feel better. That’s why I launched this monthly roundup of what I consider to be the best items for you guys to try. Each month you can shop my personally curated list of products that are guaranteed to get you laid. Well that’s a lie, but you know what I mean. Let’s take a look:
RAEN Aren Unisex Sunglasses
I wear quality sunglasses all year, even when it’s cloudy, because those harmful UV rays don’t discriminate. But summer is the season to reset my style and grab a new pair. These stylish shades have a great square shape that somehow seems to remain flattering on more than just the typical round face. I’m a big fan of the slightly smaller size 50 matte black acetate frames that have polished amber acetate lining the inner frame and temples. Brown lenses provide 100% protection from both UVA and UVB rays. Raen describes this color combo as a subtle nod to the Black and Tan — a stout layered over a pale ale — but I consider mine more of a subtle nod to my Panerai Luminor Marina black an tan color combo.

S’well Stainless Steel Straw Set
I could probably be a professional iced coffee drinker, if such a job existed. It doesn’t matter how cold it was outside, I like to sip that joe through a straw, plain and simple. But all it took was one sea turtle to get me thinking about what my possible alternatives to this addiction might be. I’ve used the paper straws — not a fan — and retractable straw keychain which handy for sure, buta bit of a pain to clean.
Then S’well decided to go change the game again by introducing this set of four stainless steel straws with food-grade silicone flexible necks and a cleaning brush. If I’m carrying a bag, I have a straw with me. When I’m at my desk sipping my cold brew, I’m using one. At home, one is submerged in my SodaStream-made seltzer. Basically, these have changed my life and I’m hoping they not only change yours, but help change the future of our oceans and animals inhabiting them … even if just a little.

Activated Charcoal Whitening Toothpaste
OK, I’ll be the first to admit that I floss just about every night, I whiten my teeth when I can, and I like fluoride in my toothpaste. But I’m also old school, and drink tap water on what I would call a regular basis. Luckily my drinking water has fluoride in it, so I’m willing to break my toothpaste rule every now and then to try something new. Enter Moon Oral Care.
It’s not often you get a toothpaste that is good for you thanks to its lack of questionable ingredients, tastes really good and actually leaves behind a really fresh taste in your mouth. Moon pretty much nailed it, down to the activated charcoal not making my mouth black (somehow) after using it. Will I never use a fluoride toothpaste again? Of course I will. I’m too particular about my teeth to go fluoride-free for life. But, of all the options put before me, this has been one of my favorites to date.

REN Clean Screen Mineral SPF 30 Mattifying Face Sunscreen
Let’s get one thing straight guys — if you use a mineral sunscreen, chances are you will leave a little white cast behind. I’m not going to lie and tell you this is some unicorn sunscreen that manages to have 22% zinc oxide in it and just goes on without any effort at all. I wouldn’t play you like that.
Here’s what I am going to say — I have tested my fair share of sunscreens and sunscreens and sunscreens and I really liked this one. It’s thick, so a little goes a long way, and the fragrance is completely neutral. One of my favorite boxes this sunscreen checks is that it is reef-safe and overall good for the environment. Unlike a lot of other packaging, this tube was designed to be 100% recyclable as is — no need to seperate it for its cap because seriously, even the most die-hard recyclers out there forget let that one slip sometimes.

Acqua di Parma Room Diffuser
I'm a sucker for a home fragrance. My method of choice is a candle, but as the weather gets warmer, I often don’t want to light a warming fragrance, even if I am in my air conditioned living room. Another thing I’m a sucker for? Acqua di Parma fragrance. If I could drape my entire life with that opulent family of fragrances I would. Well, guess what … Now I can, and you can too!
The luxury Italian brand has launched an entire collection of items to make your home smell better than ever, and as hard as it was to choose between the new slow burning candle and the long-lasting room diffuser, I let the season make the decision for me. The room diffuser. Whichever you prefer, both are available in five scents designed to work all year.

Youth To The People Adaptogen Soothe + Hydrate Activated Mist
I could make a case for a facial mist any time of day, any day of the year, but the truth is, mists are great hydrating companions whenever you are wherever you are. This new mist from Youth To The People really stands out from the rest. Coming out of California, this sustainable, vegan and cruelty-free brand made this lightweight spray for everyone.
My favorite time to use them gem is after I shave. The combination of antioxidant-rich adaptogens, soothing peptides and a favorite of mine, hyaluronic acid, makes my skin feel both hydrated and protected. The consistency is not as thick as an after-shave balm, but my face feels equally at ease. YTTP recommends using three time per day, but I find that morning post-shave and night post-wash are doing me just fine. However, I have a feeling come winter, I’ll have one at my desk to counteract the overdrying effects of office heat.

GilletteLabs Heated Razor
What do you get the dad who has everything? Something that he can’t possibly have because it’s never been done before. This last product is unlike any other I have ever tried. As you might expect given my job title, I try a lot of razors and you may remember my call out to another new Gillette razor last month, but let me explain. I believe these two can exist in facial harmony. Where as I wish I could tell you I take my time and cherish every moment of my morning shave, I don’t. Come on.
That said, I do know how to make my shaves enjoyable. This razor right here — this is nothing but an enjoyable shave. It has two heat settings, 110 and 122 degrees, and warms up in less than a second. Seriously. It snaps into its stand with ease thanks to the magnetic base and lasts a five or six shaves without a charge if you’re looking to take it with you to travel. I love pairing the warmest razor setting with the tingling and refreshing feel of eucalyptus and menthol infused shave cream. Total game changer.
